Growth to get behind

The recent news delivered by Rock Wood Products of Dillwyn Inc. is something people from both sides of the aisle can celebrate.
The company announced it will invest $8.75 million to expand its sawmill operation in Buckingham County. It will have the effect of doubling the mill’s production capacity and bringing 12 new jobs to the county.
And the growth will likely continue beyond that. Mill Manager Tim Pierce said Bill MacCauley, president of Rock Wood Products’ parent company, John Rock Inc., has big plans and there will probably be some more things coming down the line.
MacCauley promised more expansion at the Buckingham facility in the future and was pleased to have Gov. Terry McAuliffe visit to help make the announcement.
McAuliffe noted that during the next three years, Rock Wood will purchase $3.6 million of Virginia forest products, adding that to the total of the original investment.
Buckingham County Administrator Rebecca Carter said Rock Wood’s expansion is estimated to bring in an additional $136,000 in tax revenue annually.
Both Democrat and Republican politicians were present at the expansion announcement. While this is understandable since it was good news with which to be associated, it nevertheless underscores the fact that economic growth is something that can help foster unity.
All of this adds up to an exciting time for Buckingham County and the state, and we commend Rock Wood for helping make this happen.
