The Longwood University Jazz Ensemble will present a free concert Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Jarman Auditorium.

The concert will include music associated with Count Basie, Weather Report, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie. Senior voice major Roxanne Cook will sing the jazz classic “How High the Moon,” and senior saxophonist Cody Leonard will be spotlighted on the Duke Ellington ballad “Sentimental Mood.” The ensemble is directed this fall by Earl Shaffer.

The program also will feature special guests Inner Rhythm, one of the leading jazz groups in Virginia and the mid-Atlantic area for more than two decades, and led by percussionist Robert Jospe. Inner Rhythm’s signature contemporary jazz sound extends from roots in swing, Latin grooves and funk.

Earlier that day, at 3:30 p.m. and also in Jarman Auditorium and free, the musicians of Inner Rhythm will present a panel discussion on jazz as an art form and its relationship to society and politics throughout history and into the new era. The town-hall style discussion, “Jazz and the Democratic Ideal,” will be moderated by members of the Longwood Jazz Ensemble.

Both events are sponsored in part by Longwood’s Office of Academic Affairs and the Virginia Commission for the Arts. For more information, call the music departmen
