Septic repair funds offered

For most people, a septic system is likely “out of sight and out of mind.” Residents may go many years without worrying about their system until there’s a problem. Although septic systems can be easy to overlook, maintaining it is an important part of being a homeowner, according to the Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District (PSWCD). Routine maintenance can prevent problems before they occur, therefore avoiding future repairs or system replacements that can be very costly.
Funding is available through the PSWCD to reimburse homeowners for 50 percent of the costs of septic system pump outs, repairs and replacements. The program also educates residents about proper septic system care and about the environmental and health impacts of failing septic systems. Applicants must live in the Spring Creek, Briery Creek, Sandy River, Bush River, Little Sandy Creek, or Saylers Creek watersheds of Prince Edward County.
Informational workshops will be held Nov. 14 at the Rice Volunteer Fire Department from 2-3 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. Join in to learn how to properly maintain a septic system and how to apply for financial assistance. Participants will also be entered into a drawing to win a free septic pump out. To learn more about the septic program, determine if you live in an eligible watershed or to request an application, contact Emily Gibbs at (434) 392-3782 ext. 131 or via email at egibbs@piedmontswcd.org.
