Fuqua School inducted three alumni to its Hall of Fame. The school bestowed the honor on Dalton Kuhar, George Moore and Dr. Kenneth B. Batts during a ceremony Friday.

The Prince Edward Academy/Fuqua School Athletics Hall of Fame, established in 1999, honors those who have made lasting contributions through outstanding achievement in athletics or service to the schools’ athletics program.

Former athletes, coaches, administrators and individuals who have contributed to the school’s athletics history are eligible for the award. A candidate’s most recent contribution in high school athletics must have occurred five or more years prior to his induction.

When Fuqua chooses candidates, consideration is given to All-State, All-Conference, most valuable player and other awards in addition to team captaincy, comparison to other athletes at that time and leadership capabilities.

“Special Citations” are awarded to recognize individuals making similar contributions in support roles, according to Fuqua School.

Fuqua Director of Alumni Affairs Tammy Frank said she hears every day about how wonderful a place the school is.

“When events like the Athletic Hall of Fame take place, it reminds us all how lucky we are to be part of the Fuqua School family,” she said.

Kuhar graduated from Fuqua in 2010 as the only athlete in the school’s history to have her shoes bronzed. During her time at Fuqua, she achieved success in fall cross country and spring track.

She won state titles in cross country in 2008 and 2009. Kuhar was named to the All-State team three times and received all-conference honors multiple times.

Following her time at Fuqua, Kuhar attended Virginia Military Institute, where she joined the cross country team. Currently, she is applying to medical schools to achieve her goal of becoming a doctor.

Moore, a 1980 graduate, was a three-sport athlete at Fuqua School.

He was a strong pitcher on the baseball field, good at defense on the football field and put in time on the basketball court, as well, according to school officials.

Moore joined the Navy after school and now works for Securus Technologies. He’s maintained his athleticism by playing golf.

Batts, Class of 1976, lettered in football and baseball during his time as a Prince Edward Academy athlete. He won the Prince Edward Academy Defensive Player of the Year award in 1975 and received a scholarship to Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C., where he was a linebacker on the football team.

He is retired from 30 years as a Medical Corps family physician and currently works with wounded warriors at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

“The Hall of Fame Ceremony highlighted the powerful relationship between athletics, academics and life with each of these endeavors teaching core values like cooperation, commitment, perseverance, respect and responsibility,” Head of School John Melton said.

He said these same core values are part of the Fuqua School experience each day.
