Hampden-Sydney College’s football team had a two-game win streak snapped Saturday afternoon, falling 52-7 to Washington and Lee University in Lexington. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in ODAC play. The Generals remain undefeated in conference at 4-0 while improving to 5-2 overall.

The Tigers were held to 216 yards and hampered by turnovers with five giveaways. The Generals’ offense, which leads the nation in rushing, ran to the tune of 566 yards.

Washington and Lee opened the game with two touchdowns in the first quarter and added one more in the second quarter before the Tigers struck back.

Hampden-Sydney went 69 yards in 10 plays as Alec Cobb (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) hit Cam Johnson (Dillwyn/Buckingham) for a 13-yard score.

The Generals added another score in the quarter and almost two, but Bender Vaught (Ashland/Patrick Henry) forced a fumble that Timmy Morris (Culpeper/Eastern View) recovered inside the Hampden-Sydney 10-yard line.

Washington and Lee scored one touchdown in the third quarter, but also struggled at times against the Tigers defense. Kendall Blankenship (Appomattox/Appomattox) helped end one drive, forcing a fumble that Lee Dilworth (North Chesterfield/Highland Springs) recovered.

The Generals added 17 more points in the fourth quarter with a 26-yard field goal, a 1-yard touchdown run and a 24-yard interception return for a score.

Of the Tigers’ 216 yards, 169 came through the air and 47 on the ground. Cobb was 25-of-38 passing for 169 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. Johnson led all receivers with eight catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Mike DeMasi (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) led the way with 43 yards on 11 carries.

Defensively, the Tigers allowed 591 yards of offense.

Blankenship and Ryan Mallory (Mechanicsville/Hanover) each had a game-high 15 tackles. Blankenship also had a forced fumble and two tackles for loss. Vaught added ten tackles to go with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Saturday, Hampden-Sydney will host Emory & Henry College on Hall of Fame Weekend at 1 p.m.
