Some are stuck in the 1960s

John Hall, in his letter “Extreme Democrats” (Sept. 30, 2016), is correct that Republican support was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 over the opposition of racist Democrats.
However, like some of my music choices, he is stuck in the 1960s. Mr. Hall apparently has developed amnesia regarding what has happened since 1964. As a result of the passage of the Civil Rights Act, racist Democrats like Strom Thurmond broke with their party and became racist Republicans. Consequently, Republicans have done nothing for African-Americans in the last 50 years. It should come as no surprise they turned to Democrats.
While the Affordable Care Act is less than perfect, I’m still waiting to hear about the Republican plan to handle health care in this country. They’ve only had eight years to come up with a plan. And by the way, the only communists left are in North Korea.
