Editor:

Thank you for publishing Dr. Ray Gaskins’ series of articles on the history of golfing in the Farmville area. I have been a regular at all of the Farmville-area courses since 1970, so this series was both informative and nostalgic for me.

Golf, like life, is ever changing. I miss Mac Main, a former pro at the Longwood Golf Course. When I was a young boy learn-
ing golf in Danville, Mac Main influenced my early golf experience. He took a great interest in young people starting in golf and made sure those new to golf learned both the game and how to behave on the golf course.

I miss the Baskerville Bowl tournament that yearly would bring in top players from around the state to compete for that beauti- ful Baskerville Bowl trophy.

Many have written about the closing of the Longwood Golf Course, and l will be among those who miss playing at LGC. The closing of LGC is like losing an old friend from the regular foursome: You don’t stop playing, but you don’t forget the absent friend.

Remembering the well-struck shot that stays in the sky so long only to fall on the green next to the hole, and the putt that travels across the green only to fall to the bottom of the cup on its last turn — ah, the memories!

Thank you, Dr. Gaskins, for your historical account of golf in Farmville. And thanks, Longwood Golf Course, for the memories you have given us.
