One of the biggest single-day events in Farmville’s history took place this week, and the town and Longwood University made it a rousing success.

The massive endeavor of hosting the lone 2016 U.S. Vice Presidential Debate went smoothly on all levels, a testament to the remarkable preparation prior to and dedication of everyone involved during it. Mayor David Whitus and Ward C Councilman A.D. “Chuckie” Reid said everyone they talked to in the debate hall Tuesday evening was enthusiastic in praising the town and university.

Ensuring public safety across campus and town was a successful coordinated effort by the Longwood University and Farmville police departments, Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police and other local, regional, state and federal public safety agencies.

Also deserving a salute are the Farmville Area Bus, public works, Farmville Volunteer Fire Department, Piedmont Regional Jail and Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

Town Manager Gerald Spates should be thanked for helping accommodate the various law enforcement agencies assisting with the debate.

About 2,500 of Farmville’s visitors were members of world, national and regional media, and anecdotal evidence indicates they were pleased with their experience here. NBC News Lead Capitol Hill Correspondent Kelly O’Donnell told Managing Editor Martin L. Cahn the media center on campus was one of the best — if not the best — she had ever been in.

The great preparation and execution also aided in drawing a diverse crowd to experience the big event.
