Prince Edward County High School’s varsity football team fell 41-0 to undefeated host Goochland High School on a rain-soaked Friday, but the chances were there for the Eagles to write a different story.

“We came out well, and we just fell flat later in the game,” Prince Edward Head Coach James Ford said. “They didn’t jump on us. We had opportunities. We just didn’t take advantage, had some miscues, threw a couple interceptions. One ended up going back for a pick six. They were very solid, defensively.”

Prince Edward forced the Bulldogs to fumble on their first series but could not capitalize on it.

Goochland committed one turnover, while the Eagles committed two on interceptions.

“With conditions the way they were, the ball was a little slick, and not to make an excuse or anything, but (it) hit the kids in the hands, popped up in the air, and their kid was in the right place at the right time,” Ford said. “That was both interceptions.”

Senior Joel Thomas was 6-for-12 passing for 66 yards and two picks.

Prince Edward inside linebackers senior Markeem Trent and sophomore J’Sean Dupuy played well. Trent had 12 total tackles, 10 solo, while Dupuy had nine total tackles, six solo.

The Eagles (2-4) host Amelia County High School on Friday.
