New Life Church hosted an event Sunday that was positive in so many ways. It was 15 years to the day since the 9/11 terrorist attacks and, at New Life in Farmville, it became Valor Day, an occasion honoring first responders, including police, firefighters, EMS personnel and members of the military.

Many first responders, both current and veterans, came in uniform and dotted the main sanctuary during the service. Every branch of the military was represented, as well as law enforcement from Prince Edward, Buckingham and Cumberland counties. Afterward, people had a chance to meet them and extend thanks for their service at a reception.

During the service, Farmville Mayor David Whitus read a resolution proclaiming Sept. 11 Valor Day. He was accompanied by Vice Mayor A.D. Reid and Councilmen J.J. Davis and Dan Dwyer.

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. William G. “Jerry” Boykin gave the morning message and further highlighted first responders, emphasizing the need for citizens to support them, particularly as policemen and women are, in some cases, being targeted for attack.

This was a particularly positive message, because while abuse of power happens at times, it continues to be important to encourage a fundamental respect for all law enforcement as a key building block in the foundation of a healthy, civilized society.

Boykin highlighted how the jobs of police, firefighters and EMS personnel took on additional significance after the front lines of the war on terror shifted to the cities and streets of the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001.

Citing his own military experience, Boykin pointed to the proper motivation for soldiers in a battle — love for those they are protecting rather than hate for those they are fighting.

He also addressed the shift in American culture away from Christianity, and urged Christians to be active for the cause of Christ, peacefully and actively standing up for the truth written in the Bible.
