College students receiving scholarships

- Bryant Winbush received the Digital Benefits Advisor scholarship for $500. Bryant is a 2013 graduate of Cumberland High School and is currently enrolled in his sixth semester at Longwood University. He is pursuing his teaching licensure with a liberal studies major in elementary education. He is currently the vice president of the Call Me Mister program at Longwood University. The following Foundation Scholarship recipients are all former Cumberland High School graduates and are either enrolled in an undergraduate university/college or moving on to graduate school in Master’s or Doctoral programs.
Ross Fillman is the recipient of a William and Ada Sanderson Memorial scholarship in the amount of $1,250. Ross is a 2015 Cumberland High School graduate. He is currently enrolled in the highly selective School of Architecture at the University of Virginia. His professional goal is to become an architect, with an interest in historical preservation. John Bapties is a recipient of a William and Ada Sanderson Memorial scholarship in the amount of $1,250. John is an upcoming sophomore at Longwood University. He is currently studying exercise science and plans to start as a personal trainer for a few years and hopefully work his way up to either a nutritionist or an exercise physiologist. He says one of his biggest accomplishments in college is time management due to having so many activities going on at the same time. The representative for the scholarship was John W. Brenton Morris received a William and Ada Sanderson Scholarship for $1,250. Brenton is a 2015 Cumberland High School graduate. Brenton currently attends Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering and majors in aerospace and ocean engineering. He plans to minor in politics, philosophy and economics. He intends to work for SpaceX, NASA or Boeing to design the next generation of aircraft. The representative for the scholarship was John W. Sanderson, Jr. Pictured from left, John W. Lacreesha Reed received the first ever Elizabeth Dawson Memorial scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Lacreesha is a 2012 graduate of Cumberland High School and is currently in the registered nursing program at Longwood University. She is currently a senior. She states that the program is very rigorous and challenging, but rewarding as well. She hopes to continue her education to become a nurse anesthetist after passing the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses. Nicole Jefferson received the Spread Love scholarship for $750. Nicole is the 2014 valedictorian of Cumberland High School. She is currently a second year nursing student at the University of Virginia. Her career goals are to become a labor and delivery nurse and also to pursue a graduate degree to become a women’s health nurse practitioner.
