Members and friends of Guthrie Memorial Chapel met Aug. 20 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the church’s founding.
Partipants included Nevada Atkinson, Otelia Anderson, Jo Waite, Delores Hendricks, Richard Altice, Celia Hevener, Charles Fernandez, John Baker, and founder and Pastor Dr. Fillmer Hevener.
The chapel, 2663 Cumberland Road (Route 45), Farmville, is currently building a children’s chapel near its first church in Kampala, Uganda, as part of its mission work in Africa and India. In Uganda, the chapel sponsors a school, health clinic and several churches. It also has churches in Congo and Malawi.
As part of its anniversary, the chapel is relating some of its mission work. For example, Ellen John is the chapel’s health educator in India. Several years ago, she traveled to the U.S. and spoke at the chapel, telling of her Christian service in southern India.
Also, Pastor Mutebi Dickson of Uganda is Dr. Hevener’s mission assistant. He speaks three languages, English, Luganda and Swahili. Dickson attended Bugema Missionary College near Kampala, where Hevener taught in the 1950s.
The chapel holds Bible study each Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by a worship service at 11 a.m.
