George Reid Jr. will serve as the Cumberland County School Board representative for District Four once again. Reid is a former school board member and chairman.

During a special meeting Thursday, the board unanimously appointed Reid in an interim capacity to fill the unexpired term left vacant by Cynthia Morgan, who resigned several weeks ago. Reid will represent District Four through December, according to School Board Clerk Dr. Elizabeth Jamerson.

Reid, who served for 23 years on the Cumberland School Board — a majority of which he served as chairman — said he was pleased with the decision.

“The opening came up and I was asked if I would mind filling the unexpired term … on a temporary basis,” he said. “I didn’t think I would want to serve on a permanent basis anymore.” He said he would not run for the position in a special election slated for November.

“I think I would cross the bridge when we get to it, but I don’t think so. I think I’ve done my civic duty,” he said when asked whether or not he would serve if elected by write-in votes.

The candidate who wins the Nov. 8 special election will take office in January.

In addition to Reid, three people applied to temporarily fill seat: Ralph Beverly, Jenna Finnegan and Julie Pfeiffer.

Morgan resigned in July after serving for about six months. According to the July 11 school board meeting agenda, Morgan “submitted her letter of resignation effective immediately.”

Last November, Morgan received a majority of write-in votes for the District Four seat. No name appeared on the race’s ballot after Reid — who previously served the district — decided not to seek re-election.

In a previous election, voters wrote-in Reid — after he did not file for reelection — to serve an additional term on the board.
