Labor Day weekend sparks

Fireworks during Labor Day weekend? Why not, say Farmville Town Manager Gerald Spates and event organizer Perry Carrington.

On the heels of the popular annual Fourth of July weekend event — including a year when, due to weather, the event had to be moved to Labor Day weekend — the town is launching what it hopes will be a new tradition.

“The year we had it on Labor Day (weekend), we had a bigger crowd,” Spates said. “So, some (Farmville Town) Council members supported the idea to add it because students are back in school.”

Carrington, who has overseen the Fourth of July event for 14 years, said Spates called him about adding Labor Day weekend to the calendar.

“I’m getting Longwood to inform students,” he said.

The event will take place Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Farmville Regional Airport, 230 Wedgewood Drive. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m., with entertainment beginning at 5 p.m. featuring the ShugaSIZED Band and Suit & Tie Band. Fireworks will begin at 8:30 p.m. and run for about 30 minutes. Coolers are welcome, but no glass bottles, and no pets are permitted.
