The Prince Edward County High School golf team is a mixture that includes strong returning leaders and members brand new to the game.

In a match Tuesday that was a scrimmage for the Eagles, Prince Edward did not win, but its head coach, Michael Weaver, liked what he saw from his new players.

“For them to be able to go out and compete in the heat and hit the ball, I was very encouraged that we’re going to be able to win some matches,” he said.

The Eagles were able to put together some wins last season, during which they went 11-9. They placed fourth in the conference tournament out of six teams.

Four members of the 2015 squad graduated earlier this year: Niko Reinson, Brady Atkins, Ratib Stwodah and Ricardo Diaz. Reinson and Atkins were regulars in the team’s top six.

This year’s team features nine players overall: senior Henry Lutz, junior Mark Stanley, junior Chaney Sheehan, junior Madison Giles, junior Aaron Weese, junior Garrison Cheyne, sophomore Spiros Reinson, sophomore Ross Baldwin and freshman Clay Stanley.

Lutz is the definitive leader on the team, serving as team captain and the No. 1 seed. He was the top golfer in the district and the conference in 2015.

“He’s been a standout probably since about ninth grade,” Weaver said. “He’s made regionals every year. He made states last year.”

Mark Stanley returns this year after making regionals last season in his second year playing.

“Mark Stanley’s been playing really well,” Weaver said. “He’s our No. 2 seed.”

Expectations are high for Spiros Reinson, who is already the No. 3 seed on the team.

Weaver also expressed special excitement over Garrison Cheyne.

“He is new to the game, actually, as a junior,” the coach said. “He’s not really played before, and he’s actually not doing too bad. He played our fourth seed yesterday.”

Weaver figures Cheyne will probably stay in the No. 4 spot.

The coach has kept his expectations grounded for how the 2016 Eagles will perform, eyeing a possible finish in the middle of the pack in the conference.

He hopes to see multiple individual players advance in the postseason.

“I think we’ll probably get two or three maybe to regionals, and I’m hoping for a .500 season at least,” he said.

Prince Edward started the regular season Thursday in Montpelier and continues Tuesday, hosting Central Lunenburg and Bluestone at The Manor Golf Club.
