The Farmville Town Council will hold a joint public hearing with the town’s planning commission to hear citizen comments regarding on a proposed apartment complex, between Walmart and the Greens South Subdivision in Farmville on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m.

The public hearing will be held in the council chambers on the second floor of Town Hall, at 116 North Main St.

Construction of the apartments is proposed by Farmville Associates LLC and is a $20 million project, according to town documents.

Russell Harper, of Farmville Associates, declined to comment on the project.

According to town documents, the apartment complex would include a pool, club house, meeting room and self-storage units with a possibility of structured parking. About 120 units are planned.

When asked if the construction of the apartments would have a positive impact on the town, Farmville Town Manager Gerald Spates said, “I don’t think there’s any question about it.”

“We had an independent firm do a traffic study,” Spates previously said. The traffic study, by McCormick Taylor Inc., addressed traffic flow concerns noted by members of the planning commission at their April 12 meeting.

The entrance-exit will be on South Main Street just south of Milnwood Road, according to the town.

According to town documents, there was much discussion during the commission’s meeting about the safety of the entrance and exit for the development with the already heavy traffic volume on South Main Street at Milnwood Road.

Other alternative routes were discussed along with having a right turn only onto South Main Street from the complex. A traffic light with flashing caution lights alerting drivers that traffic may be pulling out ahead was also discussed.

Results from the study concluded that the development could be constructed with an unsignalized entrance.

Following the public hearing, the planning commission will meet prior to the town council meeting at 7 p.m.
