LCVA and Friends of the Janet D. Greenwood Library will present “Art after Dark: Poetry Inspired by the Artwork of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo” in the lower level of LCVA on Wednesday. Doors open at 6 p.m. for refreshments, with the presentation beginning at 7 p.m.

The presentation will be led by Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda, former poet laureate of the commonwealth of Virginia. Her presentation will explore art-inspired poetry “by examining how dramatic monologues and dual-voice poems can broaden and enrich the interpretation of an artwork.”

She will read poems written in the voices of renowned Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo that are featured in her collection “The Embrace: Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo,” winner of the 2014 Mary Lynn Kotz Award from the Library of Virginia and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The presentation will also feature audience participation; for poems that use two voices, members of the audience will be asked to read.

This event is free and open to all. No registration is required.

Art after Dark replaces the formal lecture format normally associated with museums with interdisciplinary activities such as this art workshop. The evening gatherings have a relaxed atmosphere that encourages engaging conversation. All activities are completely free of charge.
