Fuqua School students recently competed in the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation District Envirothon and will advance to the regional Area V competition to be held April 21 at Holliday Lake.
Envirothon, a natural resources competition for high school students, consists of written tests in the areas of aquatics, wildlife, soils, forestry and a special topic. An important aspect of the testing is the practical demonstration by students of their ability to apply this knowledge to real-world environmental problems.
This year’s special topic is “Invasive Species: A Challenge to the Environment, Economy and Society.”
Teams prepare an oral presentation piece, including a display board and a 20-minute presentation, revolving around the special topic scenario.
Coaches Kelly Atkinson and Tina French have worked hard to prepare the team.
“We are so proud of the students,” environmental science teacher Kelly M. Atkinson said. “They have demonstrated an impressive dedication to thoroughly learning the topics and preparing an excellent presentation.”
