School leaders and their search firm have received 16 applications for superintendent of Prince Edward County Public Schools following the completion of the leadership profile for the position.
The profile was recently presented to the board. Buffalo District Representative and Board Chairman Russell Dove said that the board has “looked at it and tweaked it.”
According to the profile, desired characteristics for for the next leader include a person who is a visionary instructional leader, effective communicator, collaborative manager and possesses individual personal qualities promoting diversity and respect.
The profile also states that the candidate should live in the county or within approximately 25 miles of the schools.
Wayne Harris and Dr. Kevin Castner, of BWP and Associates — the firm hired to conduct the search — facilitated forums in March to receive community input regarding the search for the next school chief.
The vacancy was created in December with Dr. David Smith said he wouldn’t renew his contract, which expires in June.
The forums — in addition to online surveys — have provided feedback regarding the desired qualities prospective candidates should possess.
At the final community engagement forum in March, Castner said, “as far as having the opportunity for people to have access, I think we’ve accomplished much of that.”
Dove said although the leadership profile has been created, the surveys are still available online, and feedback will be received until April 8. “We’re still looking for community input,” he said. “The info will be used now during the interview process.”
“Right now we’re just accepting applications,” Dove said.
According to Dove, more applicants are expected during the final week — with the application period ending on April 20.
At the conclusion of the application period, Dove said the superintendent search committee, consisting of Dove, Prince Edward Commonwealth’s Attorney Megan Clark and Longwood University President W. Taylor Reveley IV, will meet with the school board to determine which slate of candidates to interview during the week of April 25.
“The Prince Edward County School Board seeks a forward thinking, energetic and innovative leader who will articulate a vision that identifies aspirations for students who attend Prince Edward County Schools,” the profile states.
“The successful candidate will have a proven record of impacting students’ academic performance and will have experience working in a similar type community. The next superintendent will demonstrate a commitment to collaboration with the school board, staff and community, and will be student-focused and visible throughout the schools and community.”
