I read with great interest about the recent protest demonstration and letters to your paper opposing the closing of the Longwood Golf Course.

While change can be difficult, we still have two first-class golf clubs within a short distance of Farmville. 

Longwood students, faculty and administration will be able to play at the Manor course for approximately the same fees as their old course. Also, contrary to one writer’s implications, the Manor course is open to all golfers. 

They are offering non-members a package deal for a round of golf with a cart for fees similar to those at Longwood. These displaced golfers seem to have adequate, affordable golfing opportunities at the two other courses, so to me, it’s a win-win situation for everyone.

Rather than lament the closing of the Longwood course, we should thank the university for sharing its golf course with our community for so many years. I will always have fond memories of learning to play golf there as a child and of enjoying many rounds of golf there with friends.

Let’s respect Longwood’s decision.

I’m sure it was based on what is best for the university and its future. Longwood is a wonderful asset and a vital part of our community. 

I would encourage everyone to support the university as it moves forward, as we should support the Farmville and Manor golf courses.
