BUCKINGHAM — County supervisors in Buckingham County have set an April 19 public hearing to consider amending the county’s zoning map to zone the former Gold Hill Elementary School to light industrial, M-1.

The recommendation from the county’s planning commission also includes an amendment to the zoning ordinance.

The county-owned building and 25 acres are currently zoned agriculture, A-1. The request, from County Administrator Rebecca S. Carter, seeks to make the over 27,000-square-foot building more marketable to businesses.

“The county administrator has been working with Virginia’s Growth Alliance to market the building; however, many interested companies want the building zoned and ready for their use,” according to county documents.

The zoning ordinance change would remove certain heavy industrial uses from the zoning district.

“These changes include additions of uses that will make M-1 property more marketable, but also light in nature,” according to county documents.
