These are my thoughts about the new Longwood University master plan and the Longwood Golf Course.

First, a word about the golf course. This is how the Longwood website describes it: “The historic Longwood Golf Course has served Longwood University and the Farmville community since 1935.” 

My brother, Tony DeMuth, learned to play there and went on to be a member of the N.C. Wesleyan College golf team. In his years of actively playing the course, he repeatedly commented on what a great course it is on which to learn the game. 

At a time when golf is not growing due to high-greens fees, long playing times and increasingly non-new-golfer friendly courses and atmospheres, it is sad to see a facility like this pass from the public scene. 

The university has an arrangement with the Manor Golf Course which benefits its students and faculty, but does great harm to the fabric of the local golfing community.

Moving to the master plan, Longwood University President W. Taylor Reveley IV has repeatedly talked about the importance of relations between the university and the town to the extent of inserting himself in to the search for a new superintendent of schools in Prince Edward.

However, I do not see any evidence of consideration for the town and its character in the new master plan.

I am sure there are many things it can do to move forward and improve without further impinging on the town.
