Roy Tucker Garrett Sr., 91, of Farmville, widower of Myrtle Taylor Garrett, departed his earthly life on Sunday, March 6, 2016. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Cleveland and Helen Garrett of Dillwyn, his brothers, Charles, Ernest and Kendrick Garrett, his sisters, Pearl Taylor, Lucy Dudley, Bertha Colvin, Melissa Peters, Estelle Garrett and Julia Christian.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory six children, Roy Garrett Jr., Joyce Thompson (Ronny), Sandi Scarborough (Phil), Tom Garrett (Wendy), Becky Bartow (Mark), and Charles Garrett (Connie); two sisters, Frances Taylor and Grace Mottley; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many, many nieces and nephews and their families.
He had a wonderfully blessed life and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a decorated World War II hero serving in the second wave on the Normandy Beaches in Europe.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 9 at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Dillwyn, where he served as a Deacon most of his life. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the John Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department, Cumberland Road, Farmville, VA 23901.
