POWHATAN — An April 11 trial date has been set in Powhatan General District Court for 18-year-old Andre T. Eanes of Rice, who’s charged in connection with a high-speed chase that left a 73-year-old Powhatan County man dead.

According to the court’s online information database, Eanes is charged with second degree murder, grand larceny and eluding police.

In mid-December, Eanes — the driver of a reportedly stolen Chevrolet Tahoe — sped through Cumberland County into Powhatan, reaching 110 mph.

“As the pursuit came into Powhatan County heading east on Route 60, the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office deployed a tire deflation device at the intersection of Route 60 and Route 522. As the suspect vehicle approached the intersection, it made an abrupt lane change to the right lane and struck a 2009 Kia,” said State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

The crash killed Thomas R. Rutledge Jr.

The speeding and other charges against Eanes in Cumberland were dismissed, according to the database.
