“Launching New Dimensions of Service” is the theme of the Kappa Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority program initiatives for 2014-2018. 

The local chapter has worked toward the fulfillment of these initiatives by participating in and completing several community service projects. Kappa Rho Omega is sponsoring its signature youth enrichment program ASCEND (Achievement, Self-Awareness, Communication, Networking, and Developmental Skills) which is designed to motivate, engage and assist Lunenburg high school students in reaching their maximum potential. Other chapter activities include the sharing of Christmas dinner and gifts with residents of Quality Divine Adult Home in Buckingham County and summer fun with Camp Unity participants at the Burkeville Lodge for the Blind in Nottoway County.

Kappa Rho Omega Chapter sponsored a young lady from Farmville to the 2015 session of Girls State at Longwood University.  The chapter awarded two scholarships to graduating seniors of Powhatan and Amelia High Schools. Backpacks and other schools supplies were distributed to local students and to students who reside in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Mid-Atlantic Region. As part of the sorority’s 1908 Playground Revitalization Project, the chapter will donate a bench to the Virso Community Center.  The Relay- for- Life program in Buckingham was supported by the  chapter and voter registration held in collaboration with Lambda Delta Chapter at Longwood University.   

Other chapter activities included monetary and canned food donations to FACES in Farmville and seasonal wrap collection that was donated to Goodwill Industries. The Kappa Rho Omega and Farmville’s Masonic Lodge #41 AF and AM co-sponsored the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.  An Employment Fair was co-sponsored with God’s Extraordinary Women’s Ministries which addressed one of the sorority’s targets of family strength through fiscal responsibility.  A Pink Goes Red for Heart Health Day Activity was co-sponsored with the Lunenburg Correctional Center. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Program was also co-sponsored with the Race Street Baptist Church Youth Ministry which featured information on community involvement and family strengthening and an inspirational message.  At Kappa Rho Omega’s Annual Community Service Fundraiser Gala, Dr. Michelle Bell received the annual Citizen of the Year Award.   

Members attended a Joint Founders’ Day Celebration in Richmond, Leadership  Seminar in Chicago,  the Northern Western Virginia Cluster, in Fairfax, and the Mid Atlantic 62nd Regional Conference, in Richmond.  At the Mid Atlantic Regional Conference Kappa Rho Omega was awarded a first place for its exhibit display, certificate for their contribution to the Educational Advancement Foundation and recognition for its seasonal wrap project.

Friends of the sorority also accompanied its members to enjoy the plays “For Colored Girls” at Virginia State University, in Ettirck and “The Black Nativity” in Greensboro, N.C.

Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority is a community service organization whose motto is “Service to all Mankind.”
