In commemoration of Black History Month, Cumberland County High School students Sonya Long and Quentasha Williams researched and presented their findings about the Cumberland Ten to the county’s school board. The Cumberland Ten is the name of the first 10 black students who left the Luther P. Jackson School being the first to integrate the all-white schools. Members of the Cumberland Ten who were recognized are, from left, Williams (student), Ernestine Jones-Monroe, Rev. Kern Gilliam, Gwendolyn Lipscomb Hairston, Rev. Robert Jones and Long (student). Through the students’ presentations and research, not only were they able to appreciate the bravery of the 10, but the community was also afforded the opportunity to learn of their courage.
