The South Central region of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) will host a showing of the movie “Woodlawn” on Sunday in Willett Hall gym on Longwood University’s campus.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. and will be emceed by former Harlem Globetrotter and motivational speaker Melvin Adams.
The region serves Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway, Powhatan, Mecklenburg and Prince Edward counties.
“We are expecting 2,500 people at this event,” said FCA area representative Mario Huffman. “‘Woodlawn’ is like ‘Remember the Titans’ on steroids. You know how many people love that movie? Well, it is 10 times better than that.”
According to the movie’s website, the film is about “a gifted high school football player (that) must learn to boldly embrace his talent and his faith as he battles racial tensions on and off the field in Woodlawn.”
The movie is based on a story of unity overcoming division in the early 1970s in Birmingham, Ala.
“It (the movie) speaks to our community and some of the challenges that we faced back in the 1950s and 60s. But, it really spoke to how an FCA guy really challenged the community, and it brought revival to the whole area,” said Huffman. “We are excited to transform the Longwood gym into a theater for youth to watch this film.”
No admission will be charged at the event, and those interested can register online at fcarva.org. This is a first come, first serve event.
