Regular season games have ended and now the most exciting part of the high school basketball year is here — the playoffs. This week, all local varsity basketball teams will play in their respective conferences, some beginning just this week and Prince Edward teams beginning Thursday night.

Prince Edward

The Prince Edward varsity boys team advanced in the Quad Rivers Conference 34 tournament after taking a 58-43 win over Goochland on Thursday night on their home court. The team then traveled to Greensville on Saturday for a second-round matchup against the Eagles. After trailing 20-15 at halftime, Prince Edward kicked its game into the next gear and sped past Greensville just enough to edge the host Eagles 32-31.

The Eagles improve to 14-10 with their latest win and advance to the Quad Rivers Conference 34 championship game against the Bluestone Barons. The game was scheduled for Monday, however, due to inclement weather it was pushed to Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Bluestone. If both schools did not attend school on Tuesday, then the game will be played on Wednesday at Bluestone.

With knocking Greensville out of the playoffs, the Eagles also secured the No. 2 seed in the 2A East Regional playoffs. They will host their first-round game of the region playoffs on Friday.

The Lady Eagles fell 57-41 to Amelia on Thursday night. With the loss, the Eagles drop to 9-13. The loss ended Prince Edward’s playoff season with Damya Harris scoring a game-high 21 points.

Buckingham

The Buckingham County High School varsity boys basketball team ended its regular season 11-8 and have not yet begun conference playoff games. Buckingham enters the Courthouse Conference 37 tournament as the No. 2 seed, and gets a bye during the first round of the tournament which was supposed to begin on Monday night. Buckingham is still scheduled to play on Wednesday in the second round of the tournament. They will host the winner of the Appomattox/Gretna game at 6 p.m.

The Lady Knights finished their regular season 7-12 making them the No. 5 seed in the conference. Buckingham was scheduled to travel to Appomattox for the first round of the Courthouse Conference 37 tournament, originally set for Monday, on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. If they won against Appomattox, they would advance to the semifinals on Wednesday night, where they would travel to Chatham for a 7 p.m. matchup.

Cumberland

Cumberland High School’s varsity boys basketball team ended its regular season 9-11, securing the No. 4 seed in the Conference 42 playoffs. Cumberland was scheduled to host West Point at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. If Cumberland won against West Point, it would advance to the second round of the tournament, where it would play the winner of the Middlesex/Charles City matchup. Charles City would have to win the matchup for the Dukes to host the second-round game on Thursday night.

The Cumberland High School Lady Dukes (10-8) entered the Conference 42 tournament as the No. 4 seed. They were scheduled to host Charles City on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

If the varsity girls team won against Charles City, it would face off against Mathews on Thursday. The time of the game has yet to be determined.

Fuqua

Fuqua varsity boys basketball (5-16) has two games left in its regular season. The team will play at Amelia Academy on Wednesday. They will take on the Patriots at 7:30 p.m. They will finish out their season on Friday, when they host North Cross at 7 p.m.

The Lady Falcons hosted Miller School at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. They will hold their final game of the regular season on Friday at 6 p.m., when they face off against North Cross.
