Events celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King set

FARMVILLE — Several events are being hosted by the Moton National Historic Landmark & Museum, Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College honoring the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this week.

On Thursday at 4 p.m. in Jarman Auditorium at Longwood, Dr. Joy DeGruy, a nationally and internationally renowned researcher, educator, author and presenter, will deliver the MLK keynote address.

According to a museum press release, “DeGruy is an ambassador for healing and a voice for those who’ve struggled in search of the past, and continue to struggle through the present.”

DeGruy is the acclaimed author of “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome — America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: The Study Guide,” and has another book in the works, “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome Part 2: Be The Healing.”

On Friday, the community is invited to the second annual Common Ties Reception and Silent Auction at the Moton Museum. The event will be held from 5-7 p.m.
