A 19-0 run over the final 4:37 of the first half fueled Delaware State past the Longwood University women’s basketball team, 88-63, Christmas week inside Memorial Hall Gym.
The run for the Hornets came after a Deborah Headen jumper to give the Lancers a one-point advantage in the second period.
NaJai Davis fueled the run with eight of her 13 points coming in the stretch for the Hornets, who made 8-of-10 field goals during that period.
The Hornets stretched the lead to 28 points midway through the third quarter, as they opened the half on a 13-3 run.
The Lancers incorporated a full-court trap to close the margin to 13 points with just over seven minutes remaining. The trap helped the Lancers force 13 second-half turnovers and hold a 13-3 advantage on points off turnovers.
The Lancers crawled back within 13 after a Deborah Headen three-pointer with just over seven minutes remaining, but was unable to close the gap further after went on a 6-0 run in the ensuing minute to regain the 19-point advantage.
Delaware State’s Mikah Aldridge scored a career-high 25 points on 7-of-16 shooting, while notching a season-high five assists and one steal in 33 minutes of action.
She was one of five Hornets to finish in double figures, as NaJai Pollard (13), Aaliyah Davis (10), Bri Justice (10) and Amber Bogard (10) combined for 68 of Delaware State’s 88 points on the afternoon.
The career-high for Aldridge marks her eighth game in double figures on the year and her second 20-plus point effort in the Hornets’ last four games.
Her four-three pointers led an offensive attack that finished the game with 11 triples, which marks the most three-pointers given up by Longwood this season.
Meanwhile, Longwood had four players in double figures, as Daeisha Brown finished with 13 second-half points, while Kyndal Skersick also finished with 13 and six rebounds in 29 minutes.
Headen finished with 11 points, while Autumn Childress, coming off a career-high 22 points against Notre Dame (Md.) notched her second straight game in double figures with 10 points.
For Childress, a product of Midlothian, the last two games has been an offensive outburst for the sophomore, as she had averaged just 3.5 points per game and had one double-figure scoring game in her career prior to Sunday’s 22-point performance against Notre Dame (Md.). For the week, Childress averaged 16.0 points per game and improved to fifth on the team in scoring this season.
The Lady Lancers will return to the court on Saturday, when they travel to Winthrop for a 1 p.m. game.
