FARMVILLE — Winthrop’s Aliyah Kilpatrick knocked down a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to give the Eagles a 63-62 road victory Tuesday night over Longwood women's basketball inside Willett Hall.

Winthrop (11-9, 7-4) earned its third road victory of the season and the squad’s first since a 79-50 victory over Charleston Southern on January 3. Longwood falls to 3-17 overall and 3-8 in conference play.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the ladies tonight,” said head coach Bill Reinson. “They followed the game plan perfectly and competed for 40 minutes. We had a short period in the second half where we struggled to score and they were able to climb back into the game, but we regrouped again and finished strong.

The game took on a tale of two halves. In the first half, Raven Williams poured in 11 of her 17 points and Brenna Robbins scored 10 of her 17 points. The Lancers continued their strong shooting from Saturday’s win over Charleston Southern, as the squad hit 15-of-26 (.577) of their field goals and 6-of-12 (.500) from beyond the arc. Longwood also limited Winthrop to just 10-31 (.323) from the floor. The result was a 39-27 halftime advantage for the Lancers.

However, a balanced scoring attack flipped the script for the Eagles in the second period, as Winthrop shot .583 (14-of-24) from the floor and held Longwood to just .229 (8-of-35) shooting. Shaquilla Nunn and Erica Williams combined to score 17 points and grab 16 rebounds in the period.

Robbins set a career-high for the third straight game, finishing with 17 points including a 3-of-7 performance from three-point range. The sophomore’s biggest trey of the night came with just 55 seconds remaining and brought Longwood to within one point, 60-59.

Deborah Headen finished the night with nine points and five assists. None of her points came at a more crucial time than two made free throws with 14 seconds remaining to give Longwood a brief one-point lead, 62-61, before Kilpatrick matched the pair of free throws to give Winthrop the victory.

“Brenna hit a huge three and Deb made two pressure free throws late in the game,” Reinson said.

Nunn and Williams – who combined for 43 points and 28 rebounds in the first game the teams played this season at Winthrop – each recorded a double-double for the Eagles. Williams – who came into the contest second in the Big South with 18.1 points per game – finished with a game-high 18 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Nunn finished with 17 rebounds and 14 points in 40 minutes.

The game for Longwood marked the squad’s third straight contest that was decided by eight or less points, following a 53-48 loss at Presbyterian and a 79-71 victory against Charleston Southern.

“In the end, we just fell a bit short,” Reinson stated.

Longwood will look to regroup, as the squad travels to play at Campbell Saturday, Jan. 31. The game is set for a 1 p.m. tip off.
