I am a Vietnam combat veteran and I have been a practicing Muslim for over 40 years. I have studied the Qur’an and served as imam (minister or religious leader) of several Muslim communities in central Virginia and I strongly condemn the acts of terrorism that we have seen in Paris and other places throughout the world.

There is no justification for the killing of innocent people in our religious scripture. The people who commit such atrocities are simply evil, irrespective of their religion.

Just as Hitler, who terrorized the Jewish community, or Timothy McVeigh, who set off a truck bomb in Oklahoma City, these people should also be caught and punished.

People of the Abrahamic faiths — Christianity, Judaism and Islam — have more in common than they have differences.

I think we should work cooperatively for the betterment of our collective human condition.
