Ordinances considered in Dillwyn

The Dillwyn Town Council is considering adopting ordinances governing chickens and dogs in town following numerous complaints about both.
According to Dillwyn Mayor Linda Venable Paige, the council is also considering revamping its noise ordinance, which she called outdated.
“We have had so many complaints,” Paige said after the council meeting. Noise and dog ordinances were listed under new business on the council’s Oct. 13 agenda.
“People have been calling me about these three items,” Paige said.
The mayor said that a citizen had been calling about the chickens in her yard. “It has gotten out of hand,” Paige said.
“We’ve had many complaints about the dogs who are roaming through the town with people who are trying to walk because a lot of people walk in the town,” she said.
Paige said she’s heard a lot of complaints about noise.
“We want the citizens to know that we’re concerned and we’re looking at coming up with ordinances,” Paige said.
The council has not developed specifics for the ordinances.
“So the purpose for the change in the ordinance regarding noise really started when a neighbor … started a band in his basement that opens up like a garage under his house,” said council member Melissa Louis Wallace. “The noise is so loud that residents of Camden Street can hear it in their house and residents of Rosney Road as well.”
“I have done some research on what other small towns do for noise pollution and am working on setting in motion a new/revised noise ordinance for the town that would prevent further issues like these,” she said.
“We are having a lot of complaints about dogs who are freely roaming the town,” Wallace said. “These dogs cause a variety of issues if not taken care of such as destruction of property [and] possible dog fights with dogs who are being walked on leashes by the owners.”
