On Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Longwood Center for the Visual Arts will offer a free workshop on the wax-resist method. The workshop will be taught by Hampden-Sydney’s Barger Professor of Fine Arts David Dodge Lewis, whose work is on view along with Ephraim Rubenstein’s in the LCVA’s exhibition The Quickening Image: the Wax-Resist Drawings of David Dodge Lewis & Ephraim Rubenstein, a Twenty-Year Collaboration.

Attendees will learn how to create images by applying paraffin wax over paper that has been stained with various shades of India ink diluted by water. Participants will use other media, such as charcoal and pencil. Work featured in The Quickening Image contains great intensity and drama owed directly to Lewis’ and Rubenstein’s knowledge of the wax-resist technique and their expert execution of the drawing style.
