July fireworks will remain unchanged

The Farmville Town Council has voted to keep the town fireworks event on July 3 and possibly conduct another celebration on Labor Day weekend if funds are available.
After extensive discussion during the council’s Oct. 14 meeting — where an online Herald poll regarding the issue was referenced — council members chose to keep the fireworks on Independence Day and not move the event to Labor Day weekend as previously discussed.
“I think the Labor Day weekend was considered because in the past weather played a part, and then there was more people, including college students,” said Vice Mayor A.D. “Chuckie” Reid.
According to Farmville Mayor David Whitus, Labor Day weekend has typically been used as a rain date for the July fireworks event.
“Year before last it actually rained and we did [the fireworks] on Labor Day. It went over very well,” Whitus said.
He added that Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College students were in town on Labor Day as opposed to Independence Day.
“What we were debating on was because the crowd was so much smaller because of people being on vacation around that time of year [July 4],” said Farmville Town Council Member Donald Hunter.
“My point was trying to say we can include Longwood and bus people like we did last year,” he said.
Hunter also said a happy medium was reached that included keeping the event on the third and possibly doing an event on Labor Day if funds are available.
“People are looking for activities,” said Whitus.
“There’s lots of options to explore for doing something on Labor Day,” he said.
Whitus said he would like to see the town host the additional event on Labor Day particularly for 2016 leading up to the vice-presidential debate in October.
