THE ARTS HIGHLIGHTED AT H-SC

Published 4:30 pm Tuesday, November 2, 2010

On Wednesday, November 10, the Hampden-Sydney Fine Arts Department presents “The Arts, Creativity, and the Hampden-Sydney Man” in celebration of the inauguration of the College's 24th President, Dr. Christopher B. Howard. The evening will feature music by the Men's Chorus, readings by theatre students, and photographs and drawings by visual arts students centered on the inaugural theme, “National Treasure, Regional Foundation, Global Outlook.”

The program also includes three works by local professors. “Scene from Moby Dick” was composed for this occasion by Dr. R. David Salvage, Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Hampden-Sydney College and accompanist for the chorus. “Shall We Gather at the River” was adapted for the Men's Chorus by Dr. Gordon Ring, Professor of Music at Longwood University. In addition, a theatre student will read “Seeds and Seeding,” a poem written by Nathaniel Perry, Assistant Professor of English at Hampden-Sydney.

The evening will highlight the Hampden-Sydney College Fine Arts Department's mission to help each student develop in himself, and recognize in the work of others, the creative and expressive human spirit. It is our goal to celebrate the November 11 inauguration of Dr. Howard and to recognize the spirit of citizenship, honor, and leadership reflected in the 235-year history of Hampden-Sydney College through music, poetry, art, and photography.
