The Prince Edward Eagles drove down the field on their opening drive of the game against Central Lunenburg, but an interception at the goal line by Central’s Brandon Scott ended the drive and any hopes of the Eagles pulling off the road upset. The Eagles went on to fall 48-6 to the Chargers.

After the Scott interception, the Chargers marched down the field on a five-play drive that included all rushes of 10-plus yards and was capped off by a Keaun Baskerville 5-yard touchdown run. Ben Atkins kicked the extra point to give Central a 7-0 lead.

The Eagles were shut down quickly during their next series and Central again scored with Baskerville racing 75 yards for his second score of the game. Delquan Bigelow and Brandon Scott both had big gains during the Eagles’ next offensive series, but a fourth-down sack of quarterback Joel Thomas ended the drive in Central territory.

Dashawn Moore ripped off a 51-yard pickup to start the next Central offensive series and finished things off with a 1-yard touchdown run that gave the Chargers a 19-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Central continued to mount up offensive numbers as Malik Foster had carries of 18,15 and 15 yards, and finally a 5-yard touchdown run. Daveyon Rainey added the extra point to give Central a 27-0 lead.

The Eagles answered back near the end of the first half as Bigelow had runs of 50 and 24 yards before capping off the scoring drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to make the score 27-6.

Central added two more touchdowns in the second quarter as Baskerville scored from 18 yards and Moore would score from 19 yards away to send the teams to the half with Central leading 41-6.

The Chargers scored on their first offensive series of the second half when Josh Paynter connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Foster.

“We ran into a very focused Central team Friday night,” said PECHS coach James Ford. “We had good practices leading up to the contest, but they executed better that night and we left some points on the field. We were without 4 starters Friday night due to injuries, but I believe those guys who stepped in played well and show that we will have a lot of players going into the second half of the season. It was a tough loss, but one I believe we will learn from and continue to move forward.”

Thomas went 7-for-15 in passing for 79 yards and had two interceptions. Bigelow led the Eagles offense with 22 carries for 153 yards and a touchdown. Tray Scott finished the night with four catches for 40 yards, while D’Andre Bowler had a catch for 16 yards.

K’Nyron Cordell had nine tackles on the night, while Markeem Trent had eight. Bowler tacked on five tackles and a forced fumble.

The Eagles will host Bluestone on Friday night, while the Chargers will travel to Buckingham. Both games are set for 7 p.m.
