Twin Lakes State Park’s National Day of Service and Remembrance event, hosted by the Friends of Twin Lakes State Park, will be held on Saturday, Sept.12. This is a daylong event to show appreciation to community service members, first responders, and the brave men and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The day will begin with several volunteer projects around the park and end with a special evening ceremony on the lake.
At 3 p.m. all volunteers will meet at the park office to participate in several service projects around the park; all individuals, groups and organizations are welcome.
Beginning at 6:30 p.m. the public is invited to attend Twin Lakes Lighting of the Lake. Small candles will be lit within hundreds of floating paper lanterns, and each lantern will be set out onto Goodwin Lake to illuminate the night. Participates can decorate a lantern and are encouraged to bring photos of loved ones to personalize their lantern. Lanterns and craft supplies will be provided. There will be a brief memorial service from 7 to 7:30 p.m. along with a moment of silence, and the lanterns will be released onto the lake.
This is a free event, but donations are encouraged. For more details, information or directions contact the Park Office at (434) 392-3435 or email twinlakes@dcr.virginia.gov.
