The Prince Edward County High School varsity volleyball team and new head coach Janet Green got their season started last week with a non-conference game against a traditionally-strong Colonial Heights team.

The match went to five sets in what Green called, “an exciting contest,” before Colonial Heights finally claimed the 3-2 win.

The Eagles dropped the first set by a 25-19 score, but evened things up after a second 25-16 set win that saw Diamond Boxley and Olivia Borum put down several kills to pace the offense.

The third set was a back and forth battle with the teams being tied at 25 before Colonial Heights had a pair of points to claim the set.

Prince Edward answered back in the fourth set as Cameron Goodman and Grace Rust helped the Eagles take a 25-14 set win. The final game of the match was another close battle, but a few late points for Colonial Heights helped them seal the victory with a 15-12 win.

Boxley led the team with 27 kills, seven blocks and three aces. Rust had a strong night as she had 28 assists.

“The team is coming together under this new system and we are looking forward to an amazing season,” Green said.

The Eagles play at Central of Lunenburg on Thursday in a 7 p.m. district game.
