The first Buckingham Cattlemen’s Association feeder calf sale at the new B.A.R.N. (Buckingham Agricultural Resource Network) facility was held recently, and “went off without a hitch,” according to County Extension Agent Jennifer Ligon.
“Cattle were sold over Tel-O-Auction on Aug. 3 and then later that week were brought to the B.A.R.N. facility to be weighed, comingled and sent to their new homes,” she said.
The B.A.R.N. was dedicated several weeks ago.
This year’s sale brought in $1.9 million to Buckingham County and producers in surrounding counties, including Appomattox and Cumberland, she said.
“These producers were paid over $75,000 in premiums for the unique way they market and insure the health of their animals, that equates to $58 per head over market prices.”
Ligon said farmers also saved money this year in reduced fuel and shrink costs by loading out their cattle at the new facility, located on U.S. Route 60 west of Buckingham Court House, instead of hauling all the way to Lynchburg Livestock Market.
