The Cumberland High School football team was able to get some semblance of a running game going in its homecoming contest against Clarke County last Friday night.

Unfortunately for the Dukes, that was one of very few bright spots in a 42-0 loss.

“We knew what they were going to do, but we couldn't stop it,” said CHS head coach Michael Sutton. “They really schemed well against our passing game on offense, and were able to basically shut it down.

“Sims had three catches for 79 yards. For most players, that would be a good night, but for him it's a letdown. No one else was able to step up.”

Cumberland (1-5) battled poor field position all evening, while Clarke enjoyed good starts on almost all of its offensive drives. The Eagles first scored with about five minutes remaining in the first quarter, and by halftime had full-control of the contest with a 28-0 lead.

“We really put our defense in a bind with our field position,” said Sutton. “Against a team like Clarke, you've got to make things as tough on them as possible, and play a perfect game.”

Cumberland cut its turnovers from the previous week's mark of six down to two, and had its best night rushing the football, with Quentin Langhorne gaining 98 yards, but the Dukes were unable to get anything going consistently.

Cumberland was led on defense by Antonio Richardson and Arthur Byrd with eight and six tackles, respectively. Luke French and Devonte Booker recorded interceptions.
The Dukes will have an open date this Friday night, but they won't be taking the night off.

“We're going to treat it like it's a regular week, with a scrimmage on Friday to give us a game-atmosphere. We're mostly healthy right now, and we're thankful for that, but maybe the week will be good for us.”

The Dukes will host Buckingham on Friday, October 15 in the James River District opener for both schools.

“Buckingham is a team that expects to win, and even when they fall behind, they're finding ways to win. It's up to us to see if we can find a way to win. The kids will be up for the challenge.”
