About 12 mailboxes were destroyed or damaged early Saturday morning on Back Mountain and Ca Ira roads in Buckingham.
The melee spilled over to Salem United Methodist Church located on Ca Ira Road, said Buckingham Sheriff William G. “Billy” Kidd Jr., where letters from a sign were stolen and a gravemarker was destroyed. Vehicle tracks, or donuts, were also discovered at the churchyard and at other residential yards on both roads, he said.
“We’ve got the vehicle that did it in the impound lot,” said Kidd. “We’ve got some people coming in here to do some explaining today.”
Kidd anticipated several arrests in connection with the incident.
“I would just say it’s a shame that people have the nerve to destroy other people’s property,” said Sue Jones, whose Back Mountain Road mailbox was destroyed.
Salem United Methodist Church Pastor Billy Swan added that lights for one of the church signs was damaged.
“We offered up a prayer at church for those that did that,” said Rev. Swann, “because we … want somebody like that to answer for what they’ve done, but at the same time we offered our prayers that God would touch their hearts and let them see that this is not the way to go.”
