WYLLIESBURG — The Prince Edward-Farmville Youth Association (PEFYA) Majors split their first two games in the District 5 All-Star Tournament.

PEFYA defeated Colonial Heights 19-2 on Friday, then lost a 5-4 heartbreaker Monday when Prince George rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the bottom of the last inning.

Colonial Heights began Friday’s game with two runs in the first inning, a lead that would be short-lived.

Although neither team scored in the second inning, PEFYA began its scoring streak in the top of the third inning.

Nate Reed scored PEFYA’s first run. He was followed by Austin Jamerson, who was sent in on a home run by Jake Simon. Three batters went by and the bases were loaded as Colton Copley stepped up to bat. He smacked the ball over the fence for PEFYA’s first grand slam of the night. That play sent home Michael Seward, Wade Jenkins, JT Faircloth and Copley himself.

Michael Dailey would score next for PEFYA, before Reed hit a three-run home run. Hunter Gibson and Malcolm Holman scored on Reed’s homer.

Colonial Heights held PEFYA to no runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

The sixth inning would see PEFYA score eight more runs. After one player was walked home, the bases were loaded and Reed was up to bat. He hit the ball into the outfield and sent Dailey and Gibson into home. Reed scored before the bases were loaded again.

The final play of the night, due to a heavy downpour, would happen when Faircloth stepped up to the plate and sent the ball past the outfield for the team’s second grand slam of the night. Faircloth sent Simon, Jamerson and Seward in on that play.

The light rain that took place during the entire game picked up and caused the game to be suspended in the top of the sixth inning.

After the rain did not let up, Colonial Heights conceded defeat.

PEFYA did not fare as well in its second game, which began around 10:15 p.m. Monday.

PEFYA was quick to score four runs, and held that score until the bottom of the sixth inning.

Simon, Jamerson, Holman and Copley scored PEFYA’s four runs.

Holman pitched the first three innings for PEFYA. He struck out nine batters and was clocked on the radar pitching 71 miles per hour, according to PEFYA Majors coach Mark Simon. Copley also pitched two scoreless innings for PEFYA.

However, Prince George returned in the sixth inning and scored five runs to win the game.

With the loss, PEFYA was scheduled to face off against Charlotte County at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. If PEFYA lost, its season would be over.

If the PEFYA Majors defeated Charlotte County, they would advance in the tournament.
