Frank Stokes II

AUGUST 19 – Frank Edward Stokes II was born on December 14, 1921 to the late Frank and Hattie Eggleston Stokes in Meherrin. He departed this life on Saturday, August 9, 2008 at the Veterans Hospital.

At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined the New Bethel Baptist Church in Meherrin. He remained a faithful member until his health began to fail.

He enlisted in the United States Armed Forces in December 1942 and served during World War II. He received an Honorable Discharge in December 1945.

Frank was employed as a carpenter for over 50 years before he retired in 1984. He was also a member of the Prince Edward Lodge #269 for 43 years. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening and building.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lloyd, George, John, and Walter Stokes; two sisters, Rosezine Stokes and Ethel Stokes Austin; a son, Horace “Pee Wee” Stokes; a grandchild, James L. Haskins Jr., and a great-grandchild, KaTara S. Dupuy.

Frank leaves to cherish his precious memories; a devoted wife, Flossie Jennings Stokes; son, Frank E. Stokes III (Sylvia) of Keysville; three daughters, Diane Brown (William) of Cumberland; Faye Vaughan (Rev. Wyatt) and Christine Stokes, both of Farmville; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; six grandchildren, Tina, William Jr., Shuana, Frank IV, Travis, and Latoya; 14 great-grandchildren; a special, dear, and close friend, George Brown of Richmond; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 14, at New Bethel Baptist Church, Meherrin, with interment in the church cemetery. Pastor Haney Thomas Jr. officiated the service.

Wilson Funeral Home, Keysville, served the family.
