BUCKINGHAM ― Buckingham's Relay for Life will begin on Friday evening, June 10, and continue through until 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 11. The event will take place on the track at Buckingham County High School.
Former and current cancer patients; those who have lost a loved one to cancer; families, businesses, faith-based and civic organizations, and individuals wanting to make a difference in the fight against cancer are invited to take part in this exciting team event.
Pre-event activities and a Survivor's Reception will start at 5 p.m. on Friday. Opening ceremonies and the survivors' victory lap are scheduled for 7 p.m.
Community members can also enjoy pre-event activities on the track with games for the children, a bounce house, rock wall, dunking booth, and food.
At dusk, the Luminaria Ceremony will remember those lost to cancer and honor those winning the battle. Paper bags are illuminated with candles to light up the track and offer a time of silent reflection.
Luminaria bags may be obtained with a $10 donation up until the beginning of the ceremony. Photos of loved ones may be submitted by Friday morning and will be featured in a slideshow during this remarkable ceremony. Contact Beverly Worthington, event chair at (434)969-6128 for more information.
At 11:30 p.m., the Fight Back Ceremony will be a reminder of why there is a Relay and the need to raise funds to fight cancer.
The closing ceremony starts at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday morning; and at 6 a.m., Relay for Life 2011 concludes.
“Don't forget that this is a celebration of life as well,” offered Worthington. “Throughout the night, there will be plenty of entertainment and activities, including a live auction, a Womanless Beauty and Mr. Relay pageants, a Shaved Head Contest, a Cute Kids Photo Contest, themed laps, and games at various team campsites,” she added.
The Cute Kids Contest is also on tap for this year's Relay for Life-and it's a snap. Photos of children ages one to five for the Cute Kids Contest will be received until 7 p.m. on Friday night.
Entries should be no larger than a 5 by 7-inch photograph. Entry fee is a suggested $10 donation.
The winner will receive a photo shoot and an 11 by 14-inch custom framed photograph courtesy of Becky Lutz.
The Relay for Life Team for the Buckingham Charge of the United Methodist Church, which includes Rocky Mount, Browns Chapel and Hanes Chapel, is offering the third edition of the Relay for Life Collector Basket for 2011. Cost is $45.

On Thursday, June 16, at 6 p.m., Buckingham TRIAD is hosting a Hot Dog Supper to honor county residents 50 and over. The event will be held at the Agricultural Center, next to the Buckingham Arts Center, on Route 60.
The program will include a presentation by the Buckingham County Sheriff's Office on Self Defense for Seniors.
This event is free and open to all seniors (50 and over) and anyone interested in the welfare of Buckingham's senior citizens.

Okay all you motorcycle enthusiasts, here's one for you.
On Saturday, June 18, the third annual Bryant Family Memorial Ride for Hope will begin at the Dillwyn Firehouse with registration at 9 a.m. and bikes out at 9:45.
Registration is a $20 donation for single riders and $25 for doubles. Prize drawings are planned at each stop. The ride concludes back at the firehouse with lunch and door prizes.
Proceeds benefit the Relay for Life of Buckingham, which in turn benefits the American Cancer Society.
The Bryant Family Memorial Ride for Hope is held each year in memory of Clayton Bryant and Inez Bryant, who both battled cancer. Clayton and Inez were such integral parts of this community and were loved by so many. Although they live on in the hearts and memories of their loved ones, friends, co-workers and acquaintances, this fundraiser offers a great tribute to them while it raises funds to battle this dreaded disease.
Yes Virginia, Buckingham will host its third annual celebration of the National Day of The Cowboy on Saturday, July 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Historic Village at Lee Wayside. And, the Virginian-James Drury will be the grand marshal.
More details will follow but organizers, which include the Buckingham Chamber of Commerce, Historic Buckingham Inc., and the Tom Mix Rangers, wanted to make sure you put a big Cowboy Day brand on your calendar.
Here's a run down on some of the great opportunities available to area youth this summer through the 4-H.

Nuggets of Fun will offer a weeklong day camp program at Gold Hill Elementary during the week of July 11 through 14, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. A Hint of History will feature two separate age groups-one for ages five through eight, and the other for ages nine through 13.
Participants are asked to bring their lunch and a large bottle of water each day. Snacks will be provided. Cost is $40.
Fantastic 4-H Fun Days will feature the theme Science in my Toy Box and will also accommodate both age groups. Youth ages five through eight will meet each Tuesday from June 14 through July 19, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Buckingham Agricultural Center.
Ages nine through 13 will meet on Thursdays, June 9 through July 21, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, no camp will be held on June 24 for this age group due a conflict with Junior 4-H Camp at Holiday Lake.
All participants are asked to bring a packed lunch and water bottle. Cost is $60
On August 12, both groups will participate in a trip to Kings Dominion. Cost for this trip is an additional $35.
Cloverbud Summer Sensation offers a week of day camp at Buckingham Agricultural Center for youth ages five through eight from July 25 through 28, 8 to 4:30 each day. Fun in Nature is the theme for this camp. Cost is $40. Again, participants need to bring their lunch and a bottle of water.
Summer Sensation for ages nine through 13 will be held at the Agricultural Center, August 1 through 4, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. This day camp will focus on digital photography. Cost is $40 and participants must provide their lunch and a bottle of water.
Horse Camp offers a daylong session on Basic Horsemanship for ages nine through 13. Hosted at Eureka Knoll Farm in the Curdsville area, the camp will be held on July 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $15 and includes lunch and a pool party.
4-H Fishing Clinic on July 19 and 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, will take place at Horsepen Lake Wildlife Area. The clinic is open to ages nine through 18. Cost is $10.
