Southard Shields Brumfield died April 23 after a lengthy illness. He was the only child of Robert and Betty Brumfield and is survived by his wife, Pamelia Williams Brumfield. He is also survived by his son, Kenneth Thornton Brumfield, and his daughter, Shields Brumfield Jackson and her husband, Matthew Jackson. Southard had three grandchildren, Grey, Judah and Reed.
A prominent businessman, Southard owned and operated Booth & Company for many years. He was very active in the affairs of the Farmville community. His reputation for being able to repair things made him a particularly valuable neighbor and friend. As a building contractor, he played a major role in the construction of The Manor Golf Club near Farmville in the early 2000’s. He was a passionate advocate for this golf course.
Southard was a past trustee of Johns Memorial Episcopal Church, a former member of the Board of Directors of Fuqua School, and a former member of the Prince Edward County Community Development Authority. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia, majoring in history.
Playing golf was a favorite activity for Southard, and he also played bridge on many occasions. A sociable man, he liked “Happy Hour” at Charley’s Waterfront Cafe on Friday evenings.
Mr. Brumfield’s memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 29 at 1:30 p.m. at Johns Memorial Episcopal Church on High Street in Farmville. A reception following the service will be held in the church’s parish house.
