Cumberland County Public Schools has a new superintendent. During a called meeting on Wednesday, April 16, the Cumberland school board unanimously named Mary Melissa Shores to the position.

Shores, who currently serves as Cumberland High Principal, will take over from Chip Jones as of July 1. Jones is stepping down to take the superintendent’s job in nearby Prince Edward County. He applauded the decision by the Cumberland School Board, saying it was a good way to keep the district moving forward.

“I am excited about this new chapter for CuCPS,” Jones said. “Ms. Shores is a committed and passionate leader, and I eagerly await the continued progression of the division under her leadership.”

Jones also pointed to the improvement Cumberland High has seen over the two years Shores has been at the helm. This past year, 98% of students at the high school passed English. That’s up from 83% the year before. Overall, Cumberland High has seen notable growth in academics, athletics, student engagement, and community support.

Cumberland School Board praises Shores

In the statement sent out to media by the school board, they called Shores a dedicated leader.

“Shores understands the fabric of a rural community and the importance of fostering growth across all areas of a school system,” the statement said. “She brings with her a deep, realistic understanding of what is achievable and the vision needed to move the division forward.”

Those statements were backed up by comments from Cumberland School Board Vice Chair LaTesha Anderson, who said the board was proud to promote from within.

“Ms. Shores has demonstrated her commitment to our students, staff, and community,” Anderson said. “We believe in her vision and leadership, and we are excited to see CuCPS continue to thrive under her guidance.”
