Buckingham County High School sophomore Rebecca Ragland has earned a spot in the MVP ZONE this week. Ragland is a busy student who participates in the Student Council Association, Future Business Leader of America, and 4-H clubs. She also plays volleyball and tennis.

Although she enjoys being a part of these organizations, Ragland says that tennis is special to her because of its unique qualities. “I started playing tennis in the eighth grade. I didn’t know the sport too well and I wanted to try it because it was new to me. I have grown to love the sport because of my coaches. They have had a big impact on my game and they make me want to come back each season. They have taken the time to teach me different strokes and how to improve my serve. They have made me a better player,” she remarked.

BCHS varsity girls tennis coach Erin Lake also expressed her feelings on Ragland, saying, “Rebecca is a wonderful person. We chose her as our captain because she is driven, competitive, positive, has a vision for herself and her team, thoughtful, unselfish and a natural leader. She has taken it upon herself to help out one of the youngest players on the team. She has pulled her aside and helped teach her skills and helped her through feelings of frustration.”

Ragland explains that helping her teammates is just her job as captain and that her team is another reason why she plays.

“As captain, I try to help every player develop in some way. My team is like a big family and I want us to continue to improve. My goals for next year is for our team to become stronger and better,” Ragland finished.
