The Herald community calendar is published each Friday. Items must be submitted by 10 a.m. Monday for that Friday’s calendar. 

JANUARY 31

LIBRARY STORYTIME – The Buckingham County Library, located at 16266 N. James Madison Highway, will hold storytime for children up to two years old, on Friday, Jan. 31. The event will start at 10 a.m. and run for 30 minutes, with bouncing, reading and singing. Staff will work with parents on practicing ways to support talking and pre-reading skills with their children, while the children hear songs and rhymes designed to develop language skills and a sense of rhythm.

BAD KITTY ART EXHIBIT — The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, located at 129 N. Main Street in Farmville, will host the “Bad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums” exhibit from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31. The exhibit highlights the art from author and illustrator Nick Bruel, creator of the New York Times bestselling Bad Kitty series. The exhibit is free. 

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL – All Prince Edward County High basketball teams will play at Longwood’s Joan Perry Brock Center on Friday, Jan. 31. The boys junior varsity starts at 5 p.m., then girls varsity tips at 6 p.m. and boys varsity tips off at 8 p.m. All three games will be played against Nottoway County and this will be Senior Night. 

FREE LOCAL MUSIC — Charley’s Waterfront Cafe, located at 201 B. Mill Street in Farmville, will host musical group Market Street on Friday, Jan. 31, beginning at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

FREE LOCAL MUSIC — Three Roads Brewing, located at 312 W. Third Street in Farmville, will host musician Chaz Knapp on Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

FREE MOVIE — The High Street Theatre, located at 102 High Street in Farmville, will host a screening of the 1995 Johnny Depp experimental movie Dead Man, starting at 7 p.m. All High Street movies are free to the public.

FEBRUARY 1

BAD KITTY ART EXHIBIT — The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, located at 129 N. Main Street in Farmville, will host the “Bad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums” exhibit from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1. The exhibit highlights the art from author and illustrator Nick Bruel, creator of the New York Times bestselling Bad Kitty series. The exhibit is free. 

FACE CREAM WORKSHOP – The Buckingham County Library, located at 126266 N. James Madison Highway, will hold a free workshop at 1 p.m. on how to make your own facial cream and body butter. 

COLLEGE BASKETBALL — The Longwood women will look to keep their winning streak going as they play host to Charleston Southern on Saturday, Feb. 1. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at the Joan Perry Brock Center, located at 405 Spruce Street on campus. This is a time change. Originally scheduled for 6 p.m., Charleston asked for an earlier time slot to accommodate team travel. 

FREE LOCAL MUSIC — Three Roads Brewing, located at 312 W. Third Street in Farmville, will host musician Michael Dill on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

FREE LOCAL MUSIC – North Street Press Club, located at 127 North Street in Farmville, will host musical group Clay Johnson and the Hard Promises, on Saturday, Feb. 1, beginning at 9 p.m. 

FEBRUARY 2

Main Street in Farmville, will host the “Bad Kitty Does Not Like Art Museums” exhibit from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2. The exhibit highlights the art from author and illustrator Nick Bruel, creator of the New York Times bestselling Bad Kitty series. The exhibit is free. 

FEBRUARY 3 

REPUBLICAN MEETING – The Cumberland County Republican Committee will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3. That’ll be held at Spruceberry Farm, located at 94 Cartersville Road in Cumberland. Those interested in the committee’s work are invited to attend. 

FEBRUARY 4

BEEKEEPERS MEETING – The Heart of Virginia Beekeepers will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Prince Edward County Extension Office. That’s located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville. FEBRUARY 5

ALZHEIMER’S CAREGIVER SUPPORT – An Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, located at 1301 Milnwood Avenue in Farmville. That will start early at 1:15 p.m. this time, with Mary Cush teaching chair yoga exercises. For more information, call Marion Kyner at 434-547-7850

FREE LOCAL MUSIC — The Fishin’ Pig, located at 1807 S. Main St. in Farmville, will host musician Chaz Knapp on Wednesday, Feb. 5, beginning at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL — The Hampden-Sydney College Tigers will continue their push to another NCAA tournament spot on Wednesday, Feb. 5, as they play host to Virginia Wesleyan. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Kirby Field House, located at 198 Athletic Center Drive.

ORAL HISTORIESFor military veterans and family members, creative writing serves as a meaningful technique to reflect on their experiences. Michael Lund, veteran, author, director and member of VFW Post 7059, will discuss oral histories on Saturday, Feb. 8, beginning at 8 a.m. He will help people learn more about the techniques of reflective storytelling and composing oral histories.

BIRD CLUB MEETING – The Margaret Watson Bird Club will invite Dr. Pete Myers to speak on Thursday, Feb. 6, start at 6:30 p.m.. He will present the program “Bird Bedlam at the Beach”. Myers is an avid bird photographer with decades of field experience in North and South America. The event will be held at the Prince Edward County Extension Office, located at 100 Dominion Drive in Farmville. 

FREE MOVIE — The High Street Theatre, located at 102 High Street in Farmville, will host a screening of the 1971 Richard Roundtree detective movie Shaft, starting at 7 p.m. All High Street movies are free to the public.

FREE LOCAL MUSIC – North Street Press Club, located at 127 North Street in Farmville, will host country music group JB Brown and DJ Outkast, on Saturday, Feb. 8, beginning at 9 p.m. 

FEBRUARY 10 

CHAMBER LUNCHEON – The Farmville Chamber will hold their latest luncheon on Monday, Feb. 10. The event will be held at the Woodland Community Center, located at 2003 Cobb Street in Farmville, with doors opening at 11:45 a.m. Dr. Maria Almond, Director of the Piedmont Health District, will be the guest speaker this month, discussing the upcoming RAM Clinic. The cost is $10 for chamber members and $20 for guests. 

DIABETES SUPPORT GROUP – The Farmville Seventh Day Adventist Church will hold a free diabetes support group, running eight weeks and starting on Monday, Feb. 10. The meetings begin at 6 p.m. and you can call or text 434-395-9237 for more information. The church is located at 2086 Cumberland Road in Farmville. The cost of the course, including workbooks, recipes and other materials is $49.
