This week marks the grand opening of a new exhibit at the Heartland Regional Visitor Center. “Celebrating Virginia’s History: A Look at Prince Edward County”, opens later today, Jan. 23, during an event that runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The project, supported by funding from the Virginia Tourism Corporation and a VA250 grant, celebrates over 250 years of history, showcasing the rich and diverse stories that have shaped Prince Edward County and its contributions to Virginia’s legacy. This display is a key feature of Virginia’s VA250 initiative, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.

Through interactive videos, artifacts, and storytelling, visitors will explore pivotal moments in Prince Edward County’s history, including its contributions during the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and its impact on agriculture, education, and innovation. The journey begins with the county’s founding in 1754, offering a comprehensive look at its evolution over the centuries.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and soft opening were held on Jan. 16, featuring members of the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors, Town of Farmville leadership, and Prince Edward County Tourism Council. This special event celebrated the collaborative effort that made the exhibit possible and provided a preview of the engaging experience to come.

“Guests from all over Virginia, the US, and even outside of the country find their way to our Visitor Center,” said Chelsey White, Director of Economic Development and Tourism for Prince Edward County. “They often have many questions about our historical, recreational, shopping, and college-related destinations. Our goal is to get them excited about leaving the Visitor Center to explore everything this community has to offer!”
